apparently i have a quest already in progress, though my quest log doesn't tell me what it is

I think that the invisible quest occurs when you have done all you can for the day, but you still try to get a quest.

Also, in general when it asks you to deliver a letter, the quest dialog in the chatting window displays inappropriately. It says the name of the person, and then it prints a string of code that I'm guessing should represent a city or place.

The error depends on the place. Dragon City seems fine. The error occurs when visiting the Sunset Plains and the Tranquil Seacoast 1.
